who we are

From survival to protection — a legacy reborn.

The Jewish International Police (JIP) was created by resolution of the Rabbinate of the World Jewish Confederation and the Diaspora Committee as a moral, historical, and operational response to the darkest chapter in human history—the Holocaust.

During World War II, in the Jewish ghettos of Nazi-occupied Europe, more than 200,000 Jewish men were forcibly organized into Jewish police units . Caught between brutal Nazi terror and the desperate struggle to protect their families and communities, they lived in unbearable conditions.

Of the more than 200,000 Jewish police officers, fewer than 2,000 survived.

Their story is one of coercion, tragedy, sacrifice, and moral torment —but also of courage, resilience, protection, and human dignity in inhumane conditions . Many used their positions to save lives, smuggle food, protect children, forge documents, and assist clandestine rescue networks.

From tragedy to responsibility

The International Jewish Police was formed by descendants of these ghetto policemen and Holocaust survivors , transforming a legacy born under oppression into a mission of strength, dignity, and global responsibility.

Where once there was a Jewish police force under a regime of forced servitude, today the International Jewish Police exists by free choice — dedicated to protecting life, liberty, and human dignity.

This transformation represents a historic turning point:

From defenseless victims to professional protectors.
From persecution to prevention.
From tragedy to responsibility.

We had 200 thousand policeman.188 thousand were murdered.

Naturally, German authorities appointed Jewish police heads who would follow orders without question. Thus, the majority of the Jews in the ghetto considered the Jewish police to be a danger to the rest of the ghetto population. Generally, youth movements and Jewish political parties would forbid their members to join the Jewish police forces.

The size of the Jewish police force was not fixed but depended on the size of the Jewish community; therefore, in Warsaw the Jewish police numbered 2,500; in Lvov 500; and in the Lódź ghetto 800.

The Jewish police force in the Warsaw ghetto numbered approximately 2,000. From 1941, they were ordered to supply man-power for forced labor to the German authorities. When the mass deportations of the Jews of Warsaw to the Treblinka death camp began on 22 July 1942, the Jewish police units were ordered to participate in rounding up the Jews for deportation. As time went on, the Jewish policemen understood that they were merely pawns in the hands of the Germans, and that their own fate was not assured. Many deserted and joined ghetto workshops or hid. Most of the Jewish policemen and their families were eventually deported to Treblinka and murdered.

Our Purpose

The International Jewish Police was created to cooperate with governments, law enforcement agencies, and international security institutions in order to:

  • Preventing terrorism and violent extremism
  • To protect Jewish communities and all civilians.
  • To train tactical counterterrorism and crisis response units.
  • Supporting ethical intelligence and law enforcement operations.
  • To defend democratic values, human rights, and family life.

Our mission is based on one absolute principle:

Never again — not for the Jews, nor for any other people.

Security, Ethics and Human Rights

Our training doctrine is based on the belief that true security must never sacrifice human dignity . Counterterrorism operations must protect lives, preserve civil liberties, and respect the rule of law.

The International Jewish Police promotes:

  • Tactical excellence
  • intelligence cooperation
  • Ethical application of the law
  • Protection of civilians
  • Respect for religious freedom and cultural identity.

A shield for future generations.

The descendants of those who once stood powerless in the ghettos are now united in building a global structure of protection, preparedness, and moral leadership .

The International Jewish Police exists so that no nation, no family, and no people will ever again face annihilation without protection .

This is not just a security mission.
It is a mission of remembrance, dignity, and responsibility.

Never again. For anyone.

Laissez Passer

The World Jewish Confederation is REQUESTING the acceptance of Laissez-Passer status, the same PRIVILEGES that the United Nations and Interpol grant to their agents.

The Chief Rabbi of the World Jewish Confederation, Rabbi Ovadia Tank, is in contact with the main intelligence services of the Jewish Police to prevent reprisals in other Jewish communities around the world.

In our memorable history, the New York Council of Rabbis enjoys a close relationship with both the city and state governments. We are frequently consulted on issues that impact Jews and the community at large. Our tradition teaches us to “Pray for the well-being of the government.” We recognize that our prayers within the sanctuary should be accompanied by visible good deeds in the streets.

As the leading representative of the pluralistic rabbinate, we are honored to collaborate with religious and civil leaders as we address the many challenges of the Greater New York community.

We are very proud of our chaplains and first responders who serve the State in various departments, including FDNY, NYPD, NYC-DOCS, NYS-DOCCS, OEM (Office of Emergency Management), Port Authority of New York/New Jersey, NYS-OPWDD (Office for Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities), and NYS-OMH (Office of Mental Health).
